CCHL NewsCrushers Snap Mini-SlumpDate: Oct 05, 2009 Orangeville Banner Judging by the shot and scoring chance charts from their two most recent losses, the Orangeville Crushers offensive clout was bound to bust through. Then, it finally did against the Dixie Beehives and Upper Canada Patriots this weekend. Orangeville exploded for seven in its five-goal margin of victory over Dixie at the Alder Street recreation centre on Friday before swelling the twine six times against the Patriots in a 6-3 victory on Sunday. "It was nice to see us score some goals. ... We were all over (opponents)," Crushers head coach Dale Hawerchuk said, pointing to "tough" losses versus North York and Pickering last week. "The chances we've had aren't going in and that is the way it has been for us. It is hard to get too upset because we were really outplaying teams." Orangeville got solid production with goals from its leading scorer Mike Arnold (3), captain Nicholas Vassos (2), Philip Teri and newly-acquired Crushers forward Ryan Marcuz on Friday. Two Crushers goals, Arnold's second and Vassos first of the game, came short-handed at 4:21 and 4:55 of the second period. Arnold then earned his hat trick with a power-play goal assisted by Kevin Van Dyk and Brock Bissonnette at 13:09. "Any time your special teams come through, it is always a bonus," Hawerchuk said of Orangeville's number one Central Canadian Hockey League (CCHL) ranked penalty kill percentage of more than 90 per cent. "We played good defensively, only allowed two goals," Marcuz, recently acquired from Aurora, said Friday. "Then, we had a bunch of (offensive opportunities) and ended up burying them." Marcuz looks to be an excellent addition to the second line alongside Vassos, Hawerchuk said, explaining the duo could have "clicked" for "six or seven" goals on Friday night. By way of Orangeville's two-game winning streak, the Crushers (6-3) improve to third place in the CCHL's west division standings, plus remain undefeated (4-0) under the friendly roof and "good vibe" of the Alder Street recreation centre, Hawerchuk said. Looking to keep the winning momentum, the Crushers will entertain Hamilton (5-3) and Ajax (4-5) at home on Friday and Saturday night, both beginning at 7:30 p.m., before hitting the road to face off versus St. Michael's on Sunday afternoon. "They're starting to figure it all out," Hawerchuk added. "It is still a work in progress." Source: http://www.orangevillebanner.com/sports/article/77742 Back to news articles |
